Pattern Fit and Alterations- Know, Avoid, and Solve the Most Common Fit Issues with Commercial Sewing Patterns

If you talk to any experienced sewist, as they progress in their sewing, the biggest hurdle that presents a major challenge is learning how to make a sewing pattern fit. Believe me, I have had my fair share of experience with this, and for years have studied and worked to solve this dilemma that blocks my students from enjoying their sewing.

And where I have seen students experience a breakthrough is when they receive the information that is never shared with them about how patterns are designed and sized. When you know the framework for how a pattern is made, then you have the power to change it. And change it you will, my friend.

In this workshop, I am giving you a roadmap to understand and alter a sewing pattern. You need to know this, because the problems that you have with clothes bought in the store will start to show up in your sewing, and it is my intention to save you the time and toil that I know comes with making clothing fit.

This class is an introduction, and you can take it at any level of sewing skill. In this one hour workshop, I’m going to teach:

    •    How sewing patterns are drafted and what measurements that they are using.
    •    The Systems for Drafting that All Pattern Makers Use
    •    An introduction to pattern grading and how it relates, or does not relate, to your size and creates fit problems.
    •    How to Measure Your Pattern to Avoid the Most Frequent Fit Pitfalls
    •    Pattern Alterations to Solve the Common Fit Issues You are Going to Face
    •    Common Pattern Fit Myths from the Internet
    •    When to Not Alter the Pattern and Save Yourself the Time and Trouble

Don’t let fit make you quit. Knowledge is power here folks, and its better to know the big picture so you can refine the details and have more success with your sewing patterns. I hope you will join me!

Pattern Hacking- Learn Methods and Adaptations to Convey Your Design with Clothing Patterns

Have you wondered how to use and adapt sewing patterns so that they convey your own ideas for the design of a garment? In this online workshop, I’m going to share with you the process I walk my students through to change the design of a pattern to make it your own, individual design so that the garment becomes uniquely your own.

I define “pattern hacking” as changing an existing pattern to make it convey the design you originally intended. This is a creative method and approach to design that incorporates pattern making principles and critical thinking to analyze and change a pattern so that it reflects more of what you want to see in a garment. You will learn how to actually change a patterns design.

With pattern hacking, you can also change the fit, and it incorporates your own creativity in the process. But it uses more creative methods than traditional “pattern alteration” so don’t register for this workshop expecting to learn how to do something like a “full bust adjustment.” Rather, this workshop will teach you a process to approach patterns more fluidly, and change them to suit your original and unique intentions, and incorporate processes we learned in last month’s workshop.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • An introduction to the theory of how patterns are designed.
  • The benefits of using “pattern hacking” to bring your design to the pattern and to life with your sewing and how this method works.
  • The exact process I walk my students through to adapt, combine, and change a pattern to convey their idea and bring their design to an existing pattern.
  • Actual pattern adaptations and approaches to get you inspired.
  • Learn what really can’t be changed on a pattern so you don’t waste your precious time.
  • When to use “pattern hacking” methods, and how to know when its time to move on, and learn pattern drafting.

This approach will make what you create reflect your own authentic voice, creating clothes that communicate for your own personal story and approach to clothing. And that is what I believe creates the most compelling fashion design.

Are you ready to get started? This method is a true gamechanger and I can't wait to show you how to get more out of your sewing patterns!

Create a Clothing Collection

Do you want to learn how to create cohesion, style, and focused design in your collections and closets this year? In this online workshop, I'll outline a fashion design process of planning, editing, and designing a collection or wardrobe that incorporates a repeatable and actionable process that you can achieve in fashion design and wardrobe sewing.

The idea, feeling, and narrative behind what you make is what makes it truly compelling. In this fashion design class, I’m going to share with you ways to draw out your perspective and vision, WITHIN, the clothing that you make. I’ll discuss 5 approaches to bring to your craft in 2017 that are game changers and elevate your work beyond technique, to incorporate your own unique voice in design.

Here's what you will learn: 5 Ways to Create a Compelling, Thoughtful, and Meaningful Collection

  • How to develop your personal vocabulary with color, cloth, and assembly.
  • How to collect materials, shapes, textures, and colors and organize them to create cohesion in your closets and collections.
  • Designing to music, art, and architecture, and how they influence your unique perspective in fashion design.
  • How to create your own narrative for each collection and closet you create seasonally.
  • How to use your own existing clothing to develop and refine your design approaches for the items that you make.

This approach will make what you create reflect your own authentic voice, creating clothes that communicate for your own personal story. And that is what I believe creates the most compelling fashion design.
